Gut played with chamber pots and brassware, along with TV

[1] Gut, the original experience of Nam June Paik's childhood

Gut was the origin of all arts to Nam June Paik Gut seems to be related to childhood memories. Once a year, on the first lunar month of the lunar calendar, the family brought a shaman and held a Jaesu Gut' or a Gut for good luck of the family to help the family business.

Each time, a one-eyed shaman always came to perform an exorcism in the house. After setting the food, gongs and drums were played, and everyone in the neighborhood gathered and a big party was held. Nam June Paik did not believe in shamanism as a religion like his mother, but the received artistic inspiration from it. Nam June Paik's wife, Shigeko, testified. "Whenever I see him jumping up on stage like crazy, destroying the piano and violin, and performing with cellist Charlotte Moore, Nam June Paik is the same as the enchanted shaman."

[2] Gut, the 'declaration of the end of Western art Nam June Paik's words,
"Contemporary art is art not doing art," have the nuance of Western-style art has come to an end. Regarding the rules of world art, he said. "If we cannot win the game of world history, change the rules (which were monopolized by Westerners)." Nam June Paik's vision sounds like a declaration of globalization of Gut In his first Electronic Television-Music Exhibition held in Wuppertal, Germany in 1963, Nam June Paik hung the severed head of a cow at the entrance of the exhibition hall, that was good.

The subtitle is EXPEL, what did you get expelled for? It was an exorcism that expelled Western art, which was like a traditional feeling. Nam June Paik's work, "I Never Read Wittgenstein, to be introduced this time, also contains that spirit

Thirty years later, when Nam June Paik won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1993, he offered a beautiful Italian woman to a northern Mongolian "Tatar' robot. The person who filmed this video on the spot was Art Master Lee Jung-seong, Nam June Paik's electronic technician. This video is also introduced in this exhibition. this is also good He showed off Korean exorcism at the most prestigious art edition in the West. Nam June Paik viewed all exhibitions as Gut (performance).

[3] Gut, the 'revolution' that changes the world

Everyone has a different idea of gut. What is gut for Nam June Paik? It was the communication that connects God and man. "When dots are connected, they become lines, when lines and lines are connected, planes become planes, planes become objects, and eventually objects become the world. Gut is the beginning of a world that connects gods and humans!"
As a result, in Korean shamanism, Nam June Paik grafted the rite of reconciliation with the universe where the living and the dead communicate, the principle of all things in the universe that heaven, earth and human beings are one, and the festival of energy and life emanating from it, with art. I saw that there is a power that draws spirit from matter and life from death.

On the other hand, gut is a gathering of people with the same pain in a contradictory social structure to defeat the common evil that afflicts the village, relieve the fatigue of labor and daily stress, and recharge life to taste mental liberation. It also refers to a community that creates concrete alternatives for a better world.

And this kind of daedonggut is, above all, to play together without discrimination between men and women, and at the end, it is a place of festival where everyone shares food, dances, and songs. However, as Daedonggut(대동굿) in this village unites Koreans, it was distorted and reduced a lot as if it were superstition by the Japanese colonial period, the US military government, and American missionaries.

[4] Gut in modern language, 'media'
Gut, which means'eol (spirit), is by no means an outdated language. Translated into modem language, it is 'media. It is said that we are now in the age of artificial intelligence, but it is difficult to say that it is more civilized than the prehistoric or ancient times when dolmens were created. Nam June Paik said, "In the world of wolves, there is not much progress." So let's look at the media in more detail. To put it simply, the media is like a 'child' that connects a couple. Nam June Paik believed that 'media' came from medieval Christianity I saw it as a 'meditator' that mediates between gods and humans. In simple words, it is an intermediary that transcends time and space, the universe, and humans. For Nam June Paik, exorcism is linked to Mongolia, media, nomadism, the Silk Road, and the electronic internet. "I like the Siberian-Mongolian element that runs in my blood [...] The Mongols and us parted ways 3,000 years ago," he said. He unquestioningly believed in his Mongolian ancestors and was immersed in their nomadism culture.Shall we call it the 'Ural Altai Dream' where Eurasia becomes one? In 1974, Nam June Paik received an art fund from the Rockefeller Foundation and created the Internet while thinking about the Silk Road. I wanted to create a world of peace for mankind living in the global village. This is the spirit of exorcism. 'Shamanism, technology and art' are originally one root. In order to implement this more 'cheaper, faster, and easier', the concept of technology to connect satellite broadcasting around the world was first conceived.

[5] Gut, the 'noise' that dismantles the West

Nam June Paik grafted 'Random Access, a computer concept that has the property of approaching in an orderly manner in the digital era, to the gut spirit. This means that the data originally stored in the storage device is not sequentially accessed, but is accessed by finding a random location within the same time. So, it is a similar concept to 'subversive Nam June Paik viewed artists as disruptors who, like hackers, destroy Western modernism in an unpredictable way. In a way, it's like a good guy. There are many elements of the transition phase that change the existing rules.

"Originally, art is fraud. It is deceiving and being deceived. Since dictators deceive the public, artists are high-level fraudsters who deceive dictators," he added. In am era where disinformation and fake news are overflowing like now, it is difficult to see the truth. "How much is raw, how much is staged, and how much is fraud? No one knows that. The truth is the truth behind a mask," Nam June Paik's detached grievance. The truth is always in paradox. Among Westerners, John Cage was like that. So he sax noise as music rather than harmony. Nam June Paik was inspired by this and tasted freedom. In that sense. The 'noise' of the West resembles the tumultuous orgies of shamanism.

Time and space seem to be jumbled beyond the existing order and rules, but at some point they become one.

Nam June Paik liked people who subverted the existing order of the West. I liked Schoenberg a composer who overturned the existing scale, Marx' who tried to transform the existing society, "Foucault' who criticized enlightened modernism, and "Levi-Strauss who insisted on wild thinking full of primitive vitality.

Cutting his necktie with his teacher, John Cage, connects the iconoclastic spirit with the Buddhist philosophy of 'dan. In addition, Nam Jane Paik put the audience on stage in Germany poured shampoo and washed their hair, which is a kind of 'Ssitgingut(진도 씻김굿)' Nam Jume Paik did a gut all his life. It was to resist the classization of art that had degenerated into high art.

[6] Gut(Good), Nam June Paik creatively 'reinterpreted' this

Nam June Paik creatively evolved and reinterpreted the traditional exorcism. Let's take example of some of them. The first is the globalization' of gut. In Germany in the early 1960s, Nam June Paik pulle the belly button of the German audience with a stunner in 'Geeks'. To a Westerner, this was t music, art, dance, play, or performance. It was a grotesque spectacle I had never seen before This performance captivated Western audiences.
It is a cross-section of the globalization of gut In the 1970s, 55 countries around the world introduced Korea's fan dance and exorcism through the satellite broadcasting 'Global Grove'. In the 1980s, '1984 Good Morning Mr. Orwell, a satellite opera that connects broadcasts around the world, introduced Korean dances and guts along with world dances.

Second, it is the humanization of exorcism. Introduced this time, Paik Nam-june wore a hat on his birthday at Gallery Hyundai in Seoul in 1990 and commemorated a fragment of his German friend Joseph Beuys' who passed away in 1986. A picture of 'Choi Jae-young(최재영)' who captured the soul is also presented this time. It was a 'Jeopsingut' that strengthens friendship and meets spiritually beyond life and death, east and west. It is a superhuman communication that transcends human limitations.

The third is the modernization of gut. Nam June Paik's gut is not just an exorcism, but rather a new gut that combines tradition from prehistoric times, postmodernism, and the spirit of cutting edge science. Gat, which appears in Korean exorcism, is placed side by side with Western hats, and Western 'pianos' replace 'bells' or 'knives, chamber pots, and brassware. which are sacred tools to drive out evil spirits and call on gods, and our 'bronze mirrors' meet exquisitely with TVs (monitors)

[7] Gut, the 'crystal' of the five commons These are the five Spiritual Tongs, Body Tongs, Xintongs, tongs, and New Tongs selected by the curators of this exhibition <Tong. Yes. Indeed, not only Paik Nam-june but also Yulgok(율곡) said, "The rise and fall of a country depends on the opening and closing of communication."

According to the apostolic documents of the early church, divine communication occurred in the church as well. In the church, it is called Pentecost'. Suddenly, a miracle occurred where a language unknown to each other was understood by the believers. The same goes for the arts and culture. Baudelaire's 'corresponding to the five senses' is in line with Nam June Paik's 5-dimensional experimental art. Communication must occur in all fields to create a new civilization.

When supernatural powers occur, the boundaries of 'spirit and body, soul, joy, life and death, sacred world, and noble heaven' collapse. Wonhyo(원효), who invented 'Hwajaeng(화쟁)' and 'Hoetong(회통), is the highest level in Korean communication genealogy. Reconciliation is a solution to resolve extreme quarrels and confrontations, and reconciliation is a two-way communication. At that time, when Buddhism became aristocratic and became distant from the public, Wonhyo broke down the wall and went out on the streets and sang 'Muaega(원효의 무애가)'

[8] Gut, a 'total art' such as bibimbap

Nam June Paik irrationally said. "It is not difficult to combine Kant's music with Cage's philosophy." As such, his video gut includes genres from prehistoric times to advanced civilizations such as dance, rock, martial arts, tap dance, opera, concerts, masses, Indian Navajo drums, Okinawa traditional music, and Korean dance. That is why it is 'Art for all senses.

In addition, all five senses such as sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell are included. So becomes complete. Like a live broadcast, it is arbitrary, variable, and non-hierarchical. Nam June Paik viewed video art, the total art form, as a public good that no one could monopolize Therefore, there is no room for biased nationalist tendencies to enter there. In gut, there is no boundary between 'Eros and Thanatos', 'Chaos and Cosmos', and 'primitive wildness and civilized selfishness'. It is 'bibimbap' of East and West culture. That is, 'Intermedia'. Gut has a large bowl, so now it can accommodate AI, G-Chat, NFT, and Metaverse.

[9] Gut, 'Ecstasy' to taste the five senses

Nam June Paik identified the attributes of his art as "catharsis, momentary joy, satisfaction of all senses, total involvement of the whole person, extreme electronic impulse, electric magnetic oscillation of the brain, direct contact art, simulation of electrons and physiology, electronic superhighway (electronic superhighway), cybernetics of the mind, artificial metabolism multi-media and multi-directional correspondence." It can be seen that he is a super sens hedonist.

Looking down, he's also a festival-goer. "Art is a festival, or to put it simply, a party. Why do we have a gut? I'm a gut. I'm no different than a clown who encourages many people to shand dance. My art philosophy is to break down notions. [...] I work freely to prevent uniformity. It's to break into the masses so that the people can dance(1984)"

Gut is a remedy that leads to ecstatic ecstasy, and the highest goal is 'restoration of festivals’ rather than domination of money. Nam June Paik placed a higher value on the body that the mind, the body than the mind, sexuality rather than ideas, and festivals than money. In that respect, Nam June Paik is a descendant of 'Dionysus' in Greek mythology or Nietzsche, a modern philosopher.

If we come in contact with the 'trance that can be experienced in shamanism and the ecstasy' that spirits call upon, we may become 'mansin(만신)'. Shamanism is a life-affirming religion. Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism have collapsed several times in our country, but shamanism has never. Why? It is because of the femininity that cherishes life.

[10] Gut, next-generation task is 'electronization'

For us, there is a mutual resentment of the weak who suffered from the strong(해원상생). In the 20th century Western phenomenology, this is called "La force des faibles(약자의 힘). This wisdom was already present in 'Scythian Dangun' (Paik Nam-June's 1993 Venice Biennale entry), the originator of shamans) There is an idea, isn't this the spirit of exorcism that reflects humanity?

Now, task of electronizing' gut in accordance with the spirit of the times remains Num June Paik called this 'Telectronic utopia. His idea led to the commercialization of the World Wide Web(WWW) in 1993. Even today, these advanced technologies are still evolving As a conclusion, the second and third 'win-win Internet media good must be newly created according to the tradition of Nam June Paik.
