Media 中世신학의 개념으로 서신과 交流하는 手段, 모체를 의미하는 낱말이다. 굿의 어원은 몽골어의 얼(정신자체)이니 Media와 굿이란 거의 같은 말이다."빛과 어둠(明暗)은 삶의 영원한 동반자이다! 무속의 굿(미디어)은 '어둠(暗)'을 수용하는 예술이고, 할리우드 미디어는 '빛(明)'을 향유하는 예술이다"
Media 中世신학의 개념으로 서신과 交流하는 手段, 모체를 의미하는 낱말이다. 굿의 어원은 몽골어의 얼(정신자체)이니 Media와 굿이란 거의 같은 말이다. 따라서 France의 Media가 멀리 한국의 굿을 취재하러 온 것은 자연이라면 자연스러운 형상이다. 보이스(Beuys)는 죽음에서 돌아와서 발언한 극소수의 인간 중 한 사람이다. 죽음이 싫으니까 우리는 갸웃이 넘보다가는 뒷걸음질한다. 공자는 우리는 삶도 모르는데 어떻게 죽음을 알리오? 했다. 그러나 죽음을 모르고 어떻게 삶을 아느냐? 무가 유를 규정하고 유에서 無를 規定한다는 것은 Sartre 이하 많은 사람이 한 常套語(chiche)이다. 濊貊이란 늙은 늑대群을 말하는 말이냐? 元나라의 정사에서는 스스로를 푸른 늑대(靑狼)라고 일컬었다. 미국의 한 한국통은 한국인 사이에서는 동창끼리의 의가 兄弟 사이보다 짙다고 놀리었다. 한국의 정계가 소분해 가는 것도 늑대의 小群熱情主義에 기인하는 것이냐? 왜 개고기 먹는 고습이 안 없어지느냐? 누구나 그의 심장부를 直視함으로서만 그의 약점을 服복 할 수 있다.
Beuys의 二大 Performance는 늑대를 주제로 한 것이다. 그는 Alaska 공항에서도 늑대의 박제에만 매료되어 있었다.. 미국 New Mexico 州의 American Indian 中心地(TAOS)에는 Coyote 늑대를 土産物로 한 것이 갓이 갓이 限이 없다. T-Shirts에 목걸이에 磁器에 土器에………TAOS Indian은 Coyote를 벗으로 해서 자라고 白人 美國人은 Coyote를 요새로 열심히 죽인다. 그래도 Coyote는 늘고만 있다. 그 질긴 生命力은 滿洲벌판에 기민된 한국인이 200평방으로 번창해서 연길대학을 경영하는 成功에 통한다. 늑대가 우는 처량함은 Tchaikovsky의 5번 심포니 제1악장에 비등한다. 靑年 보이스(Beuys) 타타르(Tartar)인에서 배운 것은 몽골굿과 더불어 늑대의 처량한 울음이었으리라.

무릇 늑대의 世界에서 더 진보한 것은 별로 없다. 따라서 Canal plus Ex Nihilo의 四人조 로케에는 Fargier, Gautereaux, Nahon, Audio man이 우리의 Beuys 추도굿을 훌륭히 번역, Media화해 준 것도 필연적이라고 생각된다. Canada의 Indian specialist와 점심을 할 기회가 있었기에 "(지)苦 내가 America Indian으로 태어났다면 무슨 부족에 속했을까요?" 했더니 순식간에 서슴지 않고 "너는 Eskimo다"라고 명답을 해 주었다. 항상 Eskimo의 고집쟁이임과 그런 혼인의 통습을 좋아하던 나는 나의 北坊性이 인류학적으로 전문가에 의해서 증명되니 대단히 기뻤다.
京畿中學에 다니면서 나의 지저분한 공책은 전교에서 有名했다. 내 국어선생이 네 필적 전국에서 최악이라고 했다. 그는 孔孟主義者였다. 이 Complex가 내가 Happening Video에서 성공하면서도 Visual Art 세계에 들어가기를 45세까지 기피한 가장 중요한 한 원인이었다.
그런 나에게 경기中에 복수(revenge)하는 최의 최악의 Chance가 도달했다. Mary Bauermeister(그는 Charlotte Moorman 이전에, 그리고 Charlotte Moorman 이상으로 도와주었다)가 한참 神秘學과 心靈學에 매료되어 있었을 때 Scotland에서 有明한 Psychic(心靈學子)를 초대했다. 그는 신과 통화하고 신비적인 예언을 정평이 있었던 初老의 여자가 우리나라식으로 말하면 巫女인 것이다. Mary Bauermeister가 책상 위에 1010여 명의 필적을 늘어놓았다.
어떤 것이 Medium(神에 관하는 자)이냐? Scotland의 老女는 서슴지 않고 한 장을 지적했다. 그것은 경기중학 2,000명 가운데 최악의 악필 백남준 것이었다. 이것을 들은 것이 1977年, 내가 45 때였다.나는 生覺했다. "그럴 바에야 내가 서투른 Drawing을 개발해서 게발 그려 幾百弗 받아먹더라도 神罰은 안 떨어지리라"1978년에 Hamburg 美術대학 客員(교수) 자리가 왔다. "내가 이 학교에 학사입시 치르면落吏必至 하되 교수자리는 주는구나..." 그때 學生의 한 秀女가 '노은임'이었다. 교수신체검사 때에 成年성 당뇨병이 발명됐다. 인생의 明暗은 항상 같이 붙어 다니게 마련이다. 굿은 暗을 수용하는 術이다. Hollywood Medium은 明을 향유하는 術이다. - 백남준
Medium (Media) as a medieval theological concept denotes an instrumentality or means of com-municating with God. The origin of Kut (shaman's exorcism rite) is ol (the spirit itself) in Mongolian which is almost a synonym with media. Therefore, it is natural that a French TV crew came as far as to Korea to shoot the shaman exorcism rite in Korea. / Joseph Beuys was one of very few who came back from death and spoke. We hate death so much that we look at it askance and step back. Confucius said how we who do not know life could know death? But how could we know life without knowing death? / It has become a cliche since Sartre and et al that nothing defines being and being defines nothing.
Does Yemaek(an ancient Korean tribe) mean a group of old wolves? In the History of Yuan, the rulers called themselves as blue wolves. An American who is well-versed in Korean affairs teased me once by saying that the ties of friendship among the alumni are stronger than among brothers. Is it because of the passion of a small group of wolves? Why the ancient habit of eating dog meat still persist? Any one who looks straight at his own negative parts can overcome his negativity. /
Beuys' two great performances were on the theme of wolves. He was fascinated by a stuffed wolf at the Anchorage International Airport. There are in Taos, New Mexico, a center of American Indians, many many kinds of souvenirs made out of coyote; T-shirts, necklaces, pottery. American / Indians in Taos live with coyote as a friend, and Americans still kill them with passion. Still tenacious is life. Koreans fled to Manchuria chased the number of coyote is on the increase by Japanese today number more than 2,000,000 prospered so much that they built and run a Korean university in Yenchi.

The five characteristics of media industry (Art) of today are 1) Sex, 2) violence, 3) greed. 4) vanity, 5) deception.
There is no such thing as progress in the world of wolves. Therefore, I think it was quite natural the four man crew of Canal Plus Exhilo including Fargier, Gautereaux, Nahon, and Audio man (whose name I cannot recall at this moment; made such wonderful film of my shaman exorcism rite in commemoration of Beuys.
It so happened that I had lunch with a Canadian friend of mine. I asked him, "If I were born as an American Indian, to which tribe would you think I might have belonged?" Without any hesitation he said, "An Eskimo. An excellent answer! Always as stubborn as an Eskimo, I who liked of stealing a woman for a wife was very glad that a specialist proved anthropologically the nature of my Northern-ness.
When I was a student at Kyonggi High School in Seoul, I was notorious throughout the school for keeping dirty note books. My Korean language teacher rebuked me for my bad hand writing He was the believer of Confucius and Mencius. This complex was the most important reason why I who have made a success in making happenings and video arts have shunned until the age of 45 to enter the world of visual art. The best chance has at long last arrived for me to revenge to Kyonggi High School!
Mary Bauermeister (who before Charlotte Moorman and more than Moorman helped me has long been absorbed in mysticism and psychics. She invited a famous paychic from Scotland. She was reputed to have communicated with gods and for her mysterious predictions. This middle aged woman was in Korean style a shaman,
I displayed on the table a dozen different hand-writings by different persons and asked Mary which was the medium capable of communicating with gods. This middle aged Scottish lady picked up one without any hesitation. It was mine, the worst among 2,000 students of my alma mater! I think it was 1977 when I heard this. I was then 45 years old. /
"Things are as they are, why shouldn't I make clumsy drawings with my dog's paw-like and crab's paw-like hand, and if I sell them for a couple of hundred dollars, heaven would not mete out punishment to me!" There occurred a vacancy for a visiting professorship at Hamburg Academy of Arts in 1978. I thought to my self, "If I were to apply for an admission to this school, I surely have failed, but they are offering me a professorship." Miss 'No Un-nim' was an excellent student at this school. During the physical examination, it was discovered that I was suffering from adult diabetes.
Light and darkness are the eternal companions of life!
